How to Add an Email Signature on iPhone and iPad

The iOS Mail app doesn't accept a direct paste of HTML into its Signature field the way a desktop copy-paste does - the reliable way is to email it to yourself first.

Updated August 2026

  1. Build your signature with the Mail Ink editor, save it, and use the install screen's Send to email option to email the finished signature to yourself.
  2. On your iPhone or iPad, open the Mail app and open the email you just sent yourself.
  3. Tap and hold on the signature, then tap Select All and Copy.
  4. Go to Settings > Mail > Signature and paste the copied signature.
  5. Shake your device and tap Undo - this stops iOS from reformatting the signature as you paste.
  6. Exit Settings and go back to the Mail app. Done!

Note: You'll see the new signature the next time you compose a message.

Frequently asked questions

You can, but HTML formatting, images, and links usually get stripped or broken. Emailing the signature to yourself first and copying it from within Mail (as described above) preserves the formatting.

iOS sometimes auto-reformats pasted content to match its default text style. Shake your device right after pasting and tap Undo - this reverts the auto-reformatting and keeps the original styling.

Yes. Under Settings > Mail > Signature, tap "Per Account" instead of "All Accounts" to set a unique signature for each one.

No - this guide covers Apple's built-in Mail app. The Gmail and Outlook apps have their own separate signature settings; see our Gmail and Outlook guides for those.

Check that your signature's images are hosted online rather than attached as local files - locally attached images only display correctly on your own device, not for recipients.
